Puede ser de:

1. Modo: se añade -ly como sufijo a un Adjetivo. ¿Cómo? slowly, really, quietly.
2. Lugar: suele ir después del complemento directo o verbo. ¿Dónde? he lives on the island.
3. Frecuencia: va después del to be y antes del verbo principal. ¿Cada cuánto? he rarely talks.
4. Tiempo: va al comienzo o final de la frase. ¿Cuándo? she left early, go before dark.
5. Propósito: dan un fin o una razón. ¿Por qué? she shops to get the best clothes.
6. Grado: extremely, very, quite, fairly big.
7. Cantidad: little, much, a lot.
8. Interrogativos: why, where, how, when.
